I need two High Beams, Koito?

Post by Hyper_pak » Tue Oct 08, 2019 6:44 pm

I am looking for 2 working high beam headlights for my Colt. They are marked Koito on the front. Would anyone know a source for these lamps? Thanks in advance!

Only available in Japan as far as i know. Koitos were the OEM for the cars, but they aren't sold stateside.

...working...
Does this mean that used lamps will do?
You must be interested in staying faithful to OEM components.
Modern lamping systems are vastly superior to the 1970s hardware.
I tremble to think how many Koitos I've discarded.
I stopped doing that a while back and there's a good chance I could scrounge up a set of almost any of the Koitos fitted to the U.S. Mitsu-Mopars.
You say high beam; isn't your Colt the common two round lamp system in which each lamp has both high and low?
Do you know the Koito part number or designator?
Is there any additional information on the lamp?

Thanks for your reply.
My 72 is the 4 lamp version.
The outboard lamps have the 3 lug connections on the rear.
Since it is a race car they installed an aluminum radiator support with only the low beams wired for night runs.
The PO took a grinder to the back of the high beams and cut the back of the glass out.
There is not much room behind the lamps and they didn't want to cut a small hole for the connections and harness.
From the front of the car the cut bulbs look bad because of the stuff that has gotten inside over the years.
I would like to wire them up and have the stock look to the bulbs, just my preference.
I would take any that you would like to sell or get rid of.
It would be nice to have a spare in case one goes out.
I have a number of the low beams, just no high beams.

So you need the H1 5.75" lights. The outers are H4s For future reference H4 & H1 will help when sourcing new lights as those are the bulb/plug type.

Ok, so now I am confused!
On my car the Outer Beams are the dual element.
So are you saying these are in the wrong locations?
I should have the single elements outboard?

I said nothing of the sort, just explained which light is which...H4s which are dual filament on the outboard, the inboard are the H1s, which are a single filament (high beam). Its the standard setup amongst cars with twin headlights of all makes.

Ok, I am used to single headlight cars, Dart Barracuda. So on my car these are installed incorrectly. I need 2 Double Element lamps. Low and High beam in the same lamp. Sorry for the confusion. H4

So am I.
This has been an interesting thread.
I've gone from confused to confident and then back to confused again.
It's forced me to take a refresher course on the various headlamp systems used on the U.S. market Mitsus.

In stock form, your Colt's 5.75" round 4-lamp system had dual-filament low beam/high beam 3-lug lamps in the outboard positions and single filament high beam 2-lug lamps in the inboard positions. As Tim says, low/high outers with high-only inners is probably a nearly universal configuration of automotive 4-lamp systems.

Until your last post, my understanding was that your 3-lug outboards are OK and you need two two-lug inboards because the inboards were butchered by the previous owner. Based on this belief I inventoried my 5.75" round lamps.
I have two cars with complete lamp sets like yours and also two loose lamps.
Of those ten lamps, I have no Koito outers and four Koito inners.
This makes sense; in normal use, the outers are used way more than the inners and consequently are much more likely to be replaced by aftermarket lamps one or more times during a car's life.
This implies that dual-filament Koitos would be quite hard to find while used surviving high beams should be fairly plentiful.
In case you are looking for the Koito 2-prong inboard lamps, I have two that are unchipped, show no moisture and test good.
I have two others which are still in a vehicle and it will be a while before I can get to them to remove or test.
I'm thinking $10 each plus shipping for the known good ones.

I am still unclear whether you are totally committed to using only OEM Koito lamps.
If you're not, superior options in this form factor include several brands of halogens (H5001, H5006) as well as the Sylvania XtraVision H5001XV and H5006XV.

Thank you for your detailed response. I just want to run the stock lamps for appearance. I need two 3 terminal lamps. Mine were installed incorrectly and I will have to cut the aluminum radiator yoke to allow the connectors to hook to the lamps. Don't need the extra lighting at the track, it's a race car only. Anything you can offer me will be appreciated.
